I was diagnosed with a viral illness and unfortunately am unable to play. I am extremely disappointed. I'm very sorry to the fans and tournament." As a result, qualifier Zhang Shuai will be replacing William's position in the draw. Zhang will play her first round match on Tuesday, August 9 against Ana Ivanovic. The extra slot in the draw went to lucky loser, Lourdes Dominguez Lino.
