Prior to last weekend’s Davis Cup final, Nike execs gave a small group of journalists a guided tour of its World Headquarters in Beaverton, Oregon. The tour culminated with a fashion show featuring tennis’ top stars that served as a preview of the Nike clothes and shoes Roger Federer, Rafael Nadal, Maria Sharapova and Serena will debut Down Under. Here’s the one-piece, white tunic-style dress adorned with royal purple accents over a pair of purple lycra biker shorts Serena will wear on court at the 2008 Oz Open: http://blog.tennisweek.com/wp-content/uploads/2007/12/serenastyle.JPG “Serena is very involved in design and she’s always challenging us to create something special,” a Nike exec told us. “Every time she walks out on court people are excited and interested to see what she’s going to wear and she’s not afraid to push the envelope.” Serena’s cutting-edge style has spanned the spectrum from the skin-tight cat suit she wore while prowling the court at the 2002 U.S. Open to the traditional all-white dresses she’s worn at Wimbledon to the soccer-style socks she stepped into at the French Open to the denim skirt, black halter top, black biker boots and black jacket with the word “Serena” spelled out in sparkling in rhinestones across the back at the 2004 U.S. Open. “It’s not really a fetish,” Williams said at the Open when asked about her preference for satellite-sized hoop earrings. “I really believe in accessorizing. I used to wear lots of bracelets. Now I only have one bracelet on. I have a ring. I like to have my earrings and necklace. I just like to accessorize on the court. I think it’s important for me to look the best I can. I mean, most people see me on the tennis court and a lot of people don’ t see me elsewhere. That’s where I’m mostly photographed.” If it sounds like strategy is secondary to silverware in the mind of the eight-time Grand Slam champion, but the way the woman who describes herself as more entertainer than athlete sees it, every court’s a stage and she’s seeking to shine while making a statement. “I just think I represent all females out there who believe in themselves,” Williams said. “It doesn’t matter what you look like, it’s all about having confidence in you. That’s not necessarily having to wear some short shorts or extremely small top, its just about believing in yourself. I think I represent the woman that believes in herself and has confidence in herself to be unique.” When she’s playing well, winning style points can be more physically demanding than winning major points. “When I first went to meet with Nike, I told them the best thing about me is I don’t have to be extremely comfortable, I just want to look nice out there, ” Williams said. “I don’t want to be in the basic white skirt and white shirt with the collar. I want to look different. I’m OK if I have to wear a fabric that’s not your basic nylon and spandex. Let’s mix it up, try different fabrics. If I’m slightly uncomfortable, that’s OK.
