The kids’ questions for Williams covered a variety of subjects, from rackets (“Use the most comfortable.”) to how she got started in tennis (“My dad decided it would be a fun sport, and he was right!”), but others had a more kid-friendly twist. The young tennis players learned that Williams gets her hair dyed every few weeks, still gets nervous before big tournaments and can’t get enough of her favorite food, McDonald’s. She also admitted that she does “feel bad” when she loses to her sister, Venus Williams, and that she enjoys playing on the circuit because “a lot of the girls are really nice.” One girl, 14-year-old Araya Henry from the Bronx, momentarily stumped Williams with, “Where do you shop?” Williams laughed and said she had never been asked that question before. “I like malls because it’s fun. It’s nice, and there’s lots of people there,” she grinned. Afterwards, Henry said she would be spending more time in malls. “She’s my idol. I’m just really happy to see her.” But there was one thing that surprised her about seeing Williams in person. “She looks more skinny on TV! ” The most valuable advice the kids took away from Williams was her advice on how to succeed in tennis. “It takes lots of patience, lots of hard work, and you have to be really dedicated. Every day, you should watch tennis and play tennis.” The Harlem Junior Tennis and Education Program provides both tennis and life skills for children ages 7 to 18. Tennis player James Blake grew up in the program and participates annually in their winter program. -- --
