I guess they assumed that jealousy would eat away at me and that our relationship would change for the worse. Apparently, they thought the same thing in 2002 when Serena became number one in the rankings. That year she defeated me in several Sister Slams -- that's what the press calls it when we play against each other in the finals of the biggest tournaments -- and I notice that each time she beat me, certain people seemed to think my world would just fall apart. I don't like to lose to anyone, including Serena -- even in practice. And there are definitely times when I get mad at myself or feel disappointed in my performance. But to allow something as unimportant as a game ruin our friendship? Puh-leez! I come from a large family, and my sisters are my best friends. Whatever happens on the tennis court, it's not going to change my love for Serena or my pride in her accomplishments. I know better than anyone how much she's sacrificed to be a champion -- how hard she's practiced, how many blisters she's gotten on her feet, how many parties and dates she's missed out on. No matter who wins or loses the tournament, anytime there's a Sister Slam it means we've been as successful as possible. Of course everyone thinks it's cute that even when Serena beats me I sometimes pull out my camera and take pictureof her on victory stand. But I'm not trying to be cute; I'm being serious. I want my own pictures of these events. Nothing can keep me from celebrating when my best friend wins a match. --
