2004 was a consistent year for Venus. She scored some great victories, and had some losses, but she always came through with grace and dignity. The year opened with Venus returning to the WTA Tour after missing lose to six months with an injury. She chose to open her season in Hong Kong, an exhibition event. Venus overcame a 1-5 first set deficit to beat future Wimbledon Champion Maria Sharapova 7-5 6-3. Next Venus made her dazzling return to Grand Slam tennis, in Melbourne at the Australian Open. Venus wowed the public in a bold new navy and white tennis dress. Fellow American,Lisa Raymond, got the best of Venus in a tight match in the third round. Venus came alive during the clay season. Sporting a bold green and white line of dresses, Venus captured the Family Circle Cup, with a 2-6 6-2 6-1 victory over Conchita Martinez in the final. Venus carried her form into another victory at the J&S Cup and took out future US Open Champion Svetlana Kuznetsova 6-1 6-4 in the final. Venus then scored two impressive wins in the Fed-Cup to remain unbeaten on clay. Venus was hoping to win her third straight title in Berlin, at the German Ladies Open. Things changed in the final game of her epic 2-6 6-3 6-4 semi final victory over Karolina Sprem when Venus twisted her ankle. The injury would cost Venus to default the final to Amelie Mauresmo, and would be a factor in her loss at the French Open. Venus entered Wimbledon with high hopes, but left in a cloud of controversary. In her second round match, with Karolina Sprem, the chair umpire gave Sprem an extra point in the second set tiebreak. The result? A shocking 7-6 7-6 victory for Sprem. Despite everything, Venus remained very graceful in defeat. Venus next played in Stanford, and provided us with another classic battle. In perhaps the closest match of the season, Lindsay Davenport edged Venus in the finals 7-6 5-7 7-6. An injury would knock Venus out of the semis in LA, and would be a factor of her Olympic loss. Another Davenport-Venus match up was at the US Open, in the fourth round. In one of the best matches of the US Open (only the Jennifer Capriati-Serena Williams match could be said as better), Davenport ousted Venus 7-5 6-4. In the fall, Venus reached the quarter finals in all her events, continuing her consistent play.
