The opportunity to meet former president Nelson Mandela was the main reason why the sisters, who have virtually dominated women's tennis the past few years, agreed to visit South Africa from December 6 to 12. They will play exhibition matches against one another in Johannesburg and Cape Town. The Johannesburg match will take place at the Standard Bank arena, but the Cape venue has not yet been finalised. The sisters will also visit a private game reserve during their stay. A portion of the profits from the matches will be donated to Aids prevention. The seed for their visit was planted when their mother, Oracene, visited South Africa last year and had talks at government level about the visit of her daughters. Venus and Serena are seen as role models in the black community and the two have long been considered the ideal players to give tennis a boost among the black population. Kevin Curren, one of the organisers of the exhibition matches, said they would also host coaching clinics in black areas, while the clubhouse of the Arthur Ashe tennis stadium in Soweto would be officially opened during their stay.
