May 4, 2004 Capriati Cruises Through, Dokic Upset BERLIN - American Jennifer Capriati continued her early round success in Berlin on Tuesday at the Ladies German Open, moving into the third round with a straight sets win against local wildcard Julia Schruff. The No.6 seed improved to 21-8 at the event with her 63 61 victory against Schruff and will face either Petra Mandula or No.17 seed Maria Sharapova in her next match. Sharapova, playing for the first time since Miami, had a successful 2004 debut on clay in her first appearance at Berlin, defeating fellow Russian Dinara Safina in three sets, 61 16 63. No.15 seed Jelena Dokic was the only seeded player to lose her first round match, falling to American Meghann Shaughnessy. Dokic, a fan favorite who has been as high as No.4 in the world back in 2002, has struggled to regain the form that saw her win five titles over a two-year period in 2001 and 2002. The Serbian player has mustered only a 6-9 record this year and hasn't won back-to-back matches since Tokyo back in early February. Another fan favorite struggling with form, former world No.5 Daniela Hantuchova, suffered another early round loss this week, falling to No.13 seed Patty Schnyder, 62 62. Like Dokic, Hantuchova has only won back-to-back matches once this year - also at the Toray Pan Pacific Open. One player who hasn't struggled to win her share of matches is No.10 seed Svetlana Kuznetsova, who breezed into the second round with a 63 61 win against Swiss wildcard Marie-Gayanay Mikaelian. Kuznetsova, fresh off her runner-up finish in Warsaw to Venus Williams, is a three-time finalist on the circuit this year and her 22 match wins is the fourth most in women's tennis this year. No.5 seed Nadia Petrova was victorious in the day's only other second round match, defeating crowd favorite Anca Barna, 64 63. Petrova will next take on either No.11 seed Paola Suarez or Barbara Schett in the next round. Schett advanced to the second round with a 63 63 victory against Slovenian lucky loser Katarina Srebotnik. In first round action, No.9 seed Vera Zvonareva moved into a second round meeting with Fabiola Zuluaga following her 63 64 win against qualifier Tatiana Perebiynis. Zuluaga advanced to the next round with a 75 61 victory against veteran Frenchwoman Sandrine Testud. In other action, Argentine Gisela Dulko defeated Czech qualifier Michaela Pastikova, 64 63, Nathalie Dechy overcame another qualifier from the Czech Republic, Barbora Strycova, 64 76(4), while Croatia's Karolina Sprem defeated Germany wildcard Anna-Lena Groenefeld, 64 62.
