翻了一下版面，沒看到這方面的討論。雖然軍事愛好者為數不少，不過軍事史家無 論在何處，都是鳳毛麟角。如能挑選出其中的名家做推介，對一般的軍事愛好者而 言，將是很好的入門。我就不顧淺陋，來發起這個討論吧！ 軍事史本身淵遠流長，我想把焦點放在現代的作品。我選的範圍大致是六○年代之 後才開始進入學界，最好是至今仍有新作問世的。當然這不是嚴格的標準。 以下排名是想到誰就寫誰。而且列出來的書我只看過一部分。 Paul Kennedy 保羅˙甘迺迪的《世界強權的興衰》可說是經典之作，充分展現其駕馭巨大主題的 細緻功力，也讓人忘了他一開始其實是軍事史家。他曾是李德哈特的研究助理，早 期的研究著重在海權上，在一戰的研究中他的作品不可或缺。主要作品： * Preparing for the Twenty-first Century (1993) * Grand Strategies in War and Peace (editor) (1991) * The Rise of the Anglo-German Antagonism, 1860-1914 (1988) * The Rise and Fall of the Great Powers : Economic Change and Military Conflict from 1500 to 2000 (1987) 　不用介紹的經典。 * The Rise and Fall of British Naval Mastery (1986) Michael Howard 這位 1922 年生，高齡八十多的軍事史家，至今仍著述不輟。他同樣與李德哈特有 親密的交情。不僅軍事史，他最重要的貢獻恐怕是將《戰爭論》譯成英文，取代了 兩種舊譯，成為現在英文版的標準本。我當年忘了問鈕先鍾跟他有沒有交情。 * Disengagement in Europe, 1958. * The Franco-Prussian War: The German Invasion of France, 1870-1871, 1961. 　非常著名但我沒讀過的戰史。 * Lord Haldane and the Territorial Army, 1967. * The Mediterranean Strategy in the Second World War, 1967. * Studies in War and Peace, 1970. 　論文集，早年黎明有譯本。 * The Continental Commitment: The Dilemma of British Defence Policy in the Era of Two World Wars, 1972. * War in European History, 1976. 　一本很小，但非常清晰的戰史。強烈推薦作為入門書目。 * Carl von Clausewitz, On War, 1977, edited and translated by M.E. Howard and Peter Paret. 　鈕先鍾的《戰爭論》全譯本即是據此。 * Soldiers and Governments: Nine Studies in Civil Military Relations, 1978. * War and the Liberal Conscience, 1978. * Restraints on War: Studies in the Limitation of Armed Conflict, 1979. * Clausewitz, 1983. 　一本小書，聯經有譯本。 * Strategic Deception in World War II, 1990. (Volume 5 of British Intelligence in the Second World War) * The Lessons of History, 1991. * The Laws of War: Constraints on Warfare in the Western World, edited by M.E Howard, George Anderepoulous and Mark Schulman. * The Invention of Peace, 2000. * The First World War, 2003. Williamson Murray 前兩位軍事史家都是英國人，接著總算輪到美國人登場。其實美國也有不少軍事史 家，如 Russell Weigley、Gordon A. Craig 等，選擇莫雷的原因純粹只是他的作 品範圍我比較有興趣。他是退役空軍軍官，也跟美國軍方院校關係密切。 * The Change in the European Balance of Power, 1938-1939, The Path to Ruin (1984); * Luftwaffe (1985); * Military Effectiveness, three volumes (1988, edited with Allan Millett); * Calculations, Net Assessment and the Coming of World War II (1992, edited with Allan Millett); * German Military Effectiveness (1992); * The Making of Strategy, Rulers, States, and War (1994, edited with MacGregor Knox) * The Air War in the Persian Gulf (1995); * Military Innovations in the Interwar Period (1996, edited with Allan Millett) * Air War, 1914-1945 (1999) * A War To Be Won, Fighting the Second World War (2000, with Allan Millett) * The Dynamics of Military Revolution, 1300-2050 (2001, edited with MacGregor Knox). 　這本書的論點可描述成「軍事革命跟科技演進沒啥關係」。 * The Iraq War, A Military History (2003, with Major General Robert Scales, Jr.) Martin van Creveld 以色列的軍事史家。也許未來會成為軍事史家中最重要的一個。 * Supplying War (1977) * Fighting Power: German and U.S. Army Performance, 1939-1945 (1982) * Command in War (1985) 　以上三本都可列為必讀書目。 * The Sword and the Olive (1998) * Transformation of War (1991) * Defending Israel: A Strategic Plan for Peace and Security (2005) John Keegan 最後又回到英國人。Keegan被稱做是二十世紀末最多讀者的軍事史家，但是對他的 介紹我必須推給 LQY，因為我對他的作品實在太不熟。他比何華德小一輪，這兩老 實在害人不淺。:p * Barbarossa: Invasion of Russia, 1941 (1971) * The Face of Battle (1976) * Six Armies in Normandy (1982) * The Mask of Command (1987) * The Price of Admiralty (1988) * Who Was Who In World War II (1978) * The Second World War (1990) * A History of Warfare (1993) * The Battle for History: Refighting World War Two (1996) * Fields of Battle: The Wars for North America (1997) * War and Our World: The Reith Lectures 1998 (1999) * The Book of War (ed.)
