JPN/TPE - Japan turn on high-octane stuff against Taipei
OMURA-NAGASAKI, Japan (24th FIBA Asia Championship for Women): For the second
game running, hosts Japan left nothing to doubt, and chance, right from the
word spreading open the game early on and then cruised through to an 81-54
win against fellow East Asian team Chinese Taipei in Level I on Monday.
Fumikazu Nakagawa’s team scored the first seven points of the game, built up
a 9-point lead in the first five minutes and went on to close the first
quarter 17 points ahead, from where they never looked back.
Yuko Oga went berserk in Japan’s offense scoring all her 11 points for the
game and dished out 2 assists – out of a game-high 8 – all in the first
quarter to effectively seal the issue in Japan’s favor.
The hosts only grew in strength as the game progressed.
Yuka Mamiya (pic above) came off the bench and led Japan’s scoring with 14
points.
Maki Takada had 13 points and Yoko Nagi 11.
“It fell very nicely in place early on. It helped us play with confidence,”
Nakagawa said.
“It was nice to get time on the court t get prepared for the bigger battles
ahead,” said Takada.
“We knew they were strong, but didn’t really expect them to come up this
strong early,” said Taipei coach
Chang Hui-Chin.
Liu Chun-yi was the only Taipei player in the double digits with 13 points.
“We shot horribly,” rued
Chang Hui-Chin.
“Let’s accept it, we were outplayed in all departments. We will be better
prepared if we play them again,” the coach added.
