Includes games played through May 31, 2004 WNBA.com Power Rankings - June 1 Now that every team has a few games under their belt, we feel a bit more confident breaking down the numbers and issuing the weekly Power Rankings. Or not. Los Angeles has yet to play a game at home and Connecticut has yet to be tested on the road. But the Sun beat the Sparks, who beat the Shock, who lost to the Liberty. The bottom line is that no team has separated itself from the pack, further proving that the predicted logjam in the standings could last all season. 2004 WNBA.com POWER RANKINGS: Week 2 TEAM (last week) REC. NOTES 1 New York (7) 3-1 New York has won three in a row - Houston and Detroit at home and Minnesota on the road. Baranova, Hammon, Johnson and Robinson are clicking, and rookies Shameka Christon Detrina White have been impressive. Oh, and Ann Wauters hasn't even arrived yet. Upcoming: at Charlotte; at Houston 2 Seattle (2) 2-1 Seattle's offensive potency (85.0 ppg - 1st in WNBA) has more than made up for its apparent defensive woes (78.7 allowed ppg- 13th overall) so far this season. Jackson and Bird's legs are holding up so far, but Seattle looked vulnerable against Phoenix. Upcoming: at Los Angeles; vs. Phoenix 3 San Antonio (3) 3-1 The Silver Stars have won two in a row and are unbeaten against conference foes. Marie Ferdinand is averaging 18.3 ppg, Margo Dydek tallied nine blocks against the Lynx and Pee Wee Johnson is a perfect fit. Upcoming: vs. Indiana; at Minnesota 4 Charlotte (4) 2-1 Once again, the Sting are winning with defense. Holding opponents to 56.3 ppg, their Defensive Efficiency Rating is tops in the league. But Charlotte can beat you in a variety of ways, with six players averaging at least 7.0 ppg. Upcoming: vs. New York; at Connecticut 5 Houston (10) 3-2 The Comets struggled out of the gate, but went 2-0 last week at Connecticut and against Sacramento. Tina Thompson is leading the league in scoring and earned Player of the Week honors. Thompson and Sheryl Swoopes still account for 64 percent of the team's scoring. Upcoming: at Phoenix; vs. New York 6 Los Angeles (4) 2-2 As a reward for splitting their four-game road trip to open the season and knocking off the Shock on their big ring-and-banner day, L.A. gets to play a home game... before heading back on the road for another few games. Upcoming: vs. Seattle; at Sacramento 7 Detroit (1) 1-2 For stretches in their two losses last week, Detroit looked utterly confused. The defending champs collapsed down the stretch in New York and at home against L.A., had trouble holding onto the ball and looked reluctant to shoot the ball from the outside. With games against the "leasts of the east" this week, they should get back on track. Upcoming: vs. Washington; at Connecticut 8 Phoenix (9) 2-1 So much for Diana Taurasi being a good luck charm for the Suns at the NBA Draft Lottery, but her 22 points led the Mercury to its first home win of the season on Friday night and a winning record for the first time since July, 2002. Upcoming: vs. Houston; at Seattle 9 Minnesota (5) 2-3 The prototype for your average, middle-of-the-pack team, you never know which Minnesota team you are going to get. The team that beat Sacramento on the road or lost to New York at home? At least you know what you're getting from Katie Smith on a daily basis... Upcoming: vs. San Antonio; vs. Phoenix 10 Indiana (8) 1-2 The Fever only played one game last week, but got blown out in Charlotte. They have the lowest Offensive Efficiency Rating in the league, averaging a meager 59.0 ppg. Aside from Tamika Catchings, only Kelly Miller is averaging in double figures in scoring (11.0 ppg). Upcoming: at San Antonio; vs. Charlotte 11 Connecticut (13) 1-2 With a win at home against the road-weary L.A. Sparks, Connecticut moves out of the bottom slot, but in their three games the Sun have struggled to find their offensive groove. Rookie Lindsay Whalen isn't scoring just yet, but she is starting to make things happen. Upcoming: vs. Charlotte, at Washington 12 Sacramento (6) 1-3 The Monarchs have lost three in a row, showing their age as well as their lack of depth. And things don't get any easier, with visits from the defending Western Conference champions and the highest scoring team in the league. Upcoming: vs. Los Angeles; vs. Seattle 13 Washington (12) 1-3 Early on, the Mystics are experiencing the same issues that plagued them a season ago: specifically, no offensive help for Chamique Holdsclaw. Rookie Alana Beard has shown glimpses, but no one else has scored on a consistent basis. Upcoming: at Detroit; vs. Connecticut http://www.wnba.com/features/powerrankings_040601.html --
