After all, each team only played two or three games in the preseason, the newcomers have yet to gel with the returning veterans and Los Angeles and Houston are a combined 1-3. However, there were enough games for WNBA.com to begin crunching the numbers, reviewing the game footage and putting together the Week 1 Power Rankings. 2004 WNBA.com POWER RANKINGS: Week 1 TEAM REC. NOTES 1 Detroit 1-0 The defending champions have given us no reason to think they don't belong in the number one spot starting off. They met the President this week and get their rings this weekend. Upcoming: at New York; vs. Los Angeles 2 Seattle 2-0 Lauren Jackson and Sue Bird answered all of the questions about their health as the Storm won two convincing games at home. As long as their legs hold up, they will be just fine. Upcoming: at Phoenix 3 Charlotte 1-1 The Sting rebounded from an inconsistent loss in their home opener to beat Washington on the road, a game in which five players finished in double figures in scoring. Upcoming: vs. Indiana 4 Los Angeles 0-1 The Sparks could already be road weary, having played two consecutive preseason games on the road followed by a loss in the regular season opener at Seattle. And they keep going... Upcoming: at Washington; at Detroit 5 Minnesota 1-1 After losing its first game on the road in Seattle, Katie Smith willed the Lynx to victory on the road in Sacramento. Rookie Nicole Ohlde is averaging 12 ppg and 8 rpg (each second among rookies). Upcoming: at San Antonio; vs. Washington 6 Sacramento 1-1 The Monarchs ruined Diana Taurasi's WNBA debut on opening night, but with only two players averaging in double figures, scoring might be on the decline in the California capitol. Upcoming: at San Antonio; at Houston 7 New York 1-1 Becky Hammon scored 16 of her 22 points in the second half in their win over the Comets, proving that her knee is healthy and the further 3-pt. line has not affected her shot. Upcoming: vs. Detroit; at Minnesota 8 Indiana 1-1 Yet another team to split its first two games, new additions Kelly Miller and Deanna Jackson showed that the Fever could be a strong team in the East if have a balanced scoring attack. Upcoming: at Charlotte 9 Phoenix 1-1 Diana Taurasi is good enough to single-handedly move the Mercury from the bottom of the pack to the middle. Just how high this team rises depends on her supporting cast. Upcoming: vs. Seattle 10 Houston 1-2 Thompson and Swoopes are two of the best players in the world (they have combined for 71.2% of the points thus far), but coach Van Chancellor admitted that his guards had no idea what they were doing in their loss at N.Y. Upcoming: at Connecticut; vs. Seattle 11 San Antonio 1-1 Who really knows just how good a team this can be? Marie Ferdinand took over in the second half of the first game, but San Antonio struggled against the defending champions at home. Upcoming: vs. Minnesota; vs. Sacramento 12 Washington 1-1 Chamique's put-back in the second game gave the Mystics a big road win in Indiana, but the logjam of 1-1 teams means someone has to be down here, and it will be Washington until they win consistently. Upcoming: vs. Los Angeles; at Minnesota 13 Connecticut 0-1 Connecticut has only played one game so far, but we have to judge them on their body of work.
