In the orchestra, again, because of the range, it's often used to complement one instrument or another... doubling the voice of another instrument. But now, let me talk about the benefits of violas.... The instrument is able to perform "transposed" music of many instruments... so you won't miss out in interesting pieces... The instrument is lower than a violin, so less screechy and retains some of the richness of a cello. The viola is smaller than a cello so more transportable... And finally, playing music is about playing music... You play music because you enjoy music. One thing is for sure, being a violist will get you a lot of opportunities to perform. You can go where others can't and still get to enjoy the composition. Try it.... It is just as easy to go from viola to violin...I did it. So should try the viola first to see if it sticks. Thanks.
