標題英國免簽的停留時間規定

想請問一下版上的大大，
去英國持Standard Visitor的免簽，是否有一年內累積停留不得超過六個月的規定？
前幾天有在版上詢問關於去英國擔任"自帶經費訪問學者"一年的簽證問題，
由於12個月的Academic Visitor visa及 Tier 5 Work Visa都不適用於我，
因此目前傾向持六個月的Standard Visitor簽證(免簽)，進出英國兩次。
但我在台灣駐英國代表處的網頁上看到，若以免簽待遇來英，
面試官可以"最近12個月內在英累積停留期間有無超過6個月"來決定是否准予入境，
這是否表示一年只內只能在英國停留六個月？也就是說，如果我08/01/2016入境，
是否在02/01/2017就要離開，並且等到08/01/2017才能再入境英國？
另外，如果想在英國以學術名義停留12個月，是否還有其他類型的簽證可以申請？
