Sloan's teams reflect his personality By Jim O'Brien ESPN.com Updated: Dec. 8, 2006, 11:35 AM ET Jerry Sloan is a man's man and a coach's coach. I have never talked to anyone in the NBA that did not respect the man or downright admire the way he goes about the business of coaching the Utah Jazz. The way he conducts his affairs is generally under-the-radar … without any flash and with an attitude that just screams: "Leave me alone!" He just wants to concentrate on coaching his team. He does not seem to care about accolades because they would just be distractions. He simply wants to be ahead by one point when the final buzzer sounds. If you ever see Sloan smile on a basketball court, let me know. He is very, very serious about this game and the people around him are the same way. His players do not mess around when they come out for warm-ups. There is no greeting other players or coaches prior to the game. Some teams are inclined to schmooze with former teammates or coaches before the game. Not Utah. It is pure focus if you represent the Jazz. Former Utah player Scott Padgett told me the Jazz culture frowns at glad-handing with opponents prior to the game. I guess it is no surprise that this level of concentration translates into a team that always executes its offense with a precision that is the envy of the rest of the league. Sloan's teams are together from the moment he shakes hands with his starters during introductions until they walk off the court.
