The Timberwolves reached a buyout agreement with forward Shabazz Muhammad,
sources told the Pioneer Press on Thursday night.
Muhammad has wanted out of Minnesota for the last couple months, because this
season hasn’t gone as he had planned when he re-signed with the Wolves on a
one-year deal this summer.
Muhammad, whom Minnesota drafted with the No. 14 pick in the 2013 NBA draft,
was supposed to be the third wing Minnesota needed before Andrew Wiggins and
Jimmy Butler, but was buried on the end of the bench after a rough start to
the season. He hasn’t appeared in 32 games this season, a steep decline from
his role a year ago.
Muhammad could be seen working on his game well after each practice’s
conclusion, but an increase in playing time was nowhere in sight. Muhammad
didn’t see the floor in either of Minnesota’s two games since Jimmy Butler
went down with a torn meniscus.
“This league is about opportunity, and if you’re not getting your
opportunity, then it sucks,” Muhammad said back in December. “You’re
sitting, and I believe I should be playing, so it’s pretty frustrating.”
Muhammad plans to sign with the Milwaukee Bucks after he clears waivers, a
source confirmed Thursday — the Vertical’s Shams Charania reported the move
first. The buyout leaves Minnesota with two open roster spots.
