X-rays on Wally Szczerbiak's right foot Thursday revealed no broken bones a
day after he was injured in the exhibition opener against the Milwaukee Bucks.
Szczerbiak suffered a midfoot sprain when he landed on another player's
foot during the third quarter. He left the game and did not return.
Coach Dwane Casey said the forward was doubtful for tonight's game at
Indianapolis. Szczerbiak did not practice Thursday and received treatment
in the training room. He watched part of the practice while he sat in
a chair, his right foot elevated on a stool.
Casey said Kevin Garnett and Marko Jaric also were doubtful against the
Pacers. Garnett (sore right knee) returned to practice, but Casey wants
him to be fresh for the regular season. Jaric (sprained right ankle) did
not practice but plans to travel with the team during its three-game trip
to Indianapolis, Detroit and Chicago.
Hustle, hustle: Much of Thursday's practice was devoted to running the
floor, with a special emphasis on the wing players. Casey said he was
disappointed with the lapses in hustling up and down the court in the
first exhibition game. Eddie Griffin, for example, didn't exert the same
energy during the game, but he wasn't the only one.
"We were kind of home-run jogging instead of sprinting and running,"
Casey said. "I've got to get Rashad (McCants), Trenton (Hassell) and Wally,
once he comes back, turned and sprinting every time. On offense and
defense, just understanding the importance of each possession."
The Wolves didn't get a chance to run much offensively because Milwaukee
made too many baskets, reducing the number of transition opportunities.
Milwaukee shot 70.6 percent (12 for 17) in the fourth quarter and rallied
for a 92-89 win.
"We didn't run as much as I'd like to," Casey said. "We didn't attack the
basket as much as I'd like to. We didn't attack the defense. We settled for
jump shots."
Briefly: Anthony Carter, who sat out Wednesday with the flu, said he was
feeling better but did not practice.
‧ Noticeably dissatisfied with what he saw, Garnett stopped practice for
a minute to show Nikoloz Tskitishvili the proper technique for setting
screens. Then Garnett took more time immediately after practice ended and
worked individually with Tskitishvili.
‧ The Wolves attempted 18 three-pointers against Milwaukee. Casey said
that's OK as long as the appropriate players are launching those shots.
He said 38.9 percent accuracy (7 for 18) was acceptable.
‧ The Wolves made their first cut, waiving training-camp invitee
Marlon Parmer, who did not play against Milwaukee. The roster now stands at
18 players and must be cut to 15 for the regular season
