While Kevin Garnett's pockets aren't exactly empty after signing his
latest contract extension, he did not get the maximum he could have
received from the Minnesota Timberwolves.
Garnett will earn
$100 million during the five-year deal he signed
Wednesday with the Timberwolves. That's no small change, but it's
significantly less than he could have received had he demanded the
maximum allowable 5% increase from his current deal.
He is in the final year of a six-year, $126 million contract that pays
him a league-high $28 million this season.
Timberwolves owner Glen Taylor said Thursday that he and his franchise
player began talking contract extension last season.
"Kevin and my goal are exactly the same, to win a championship," Taylor
said. "I think he appreciates the fact that if he gets himself out of
line (salary-wise) with the Duncans and Kobes, we can't surround him with
the type of players to do that. ... He could have made it tougher on us."
Under the collective bargaining agreement, Garnett's five-year extension
could have been worth $179 million based on his last deal.
Because Garnett took less money and will earn less than $20 million next
season, the Timberwolves will have a little more flexibility to make
personnel moves. This year Minnesota's payroll is $70 million and the team
is about $30 million over the cap.
