As widely expected, Tracy Letts' play "August: Osage County" has
won the 2008 Pulitzer Prize for drama.
"I didn't want to hear I was the front-runner but it was inescapable,"
says Letts, 42, who was at home in Chicago when he got word of his win.
"August: Osage County" opened on Broadway in December following its run
last summer at the Steppenwolf Theater in Chicago. It tells the story of
a highly dysfunctional yet often hilarious Oklahoma family dealing with
the disappearance of the patriarch, and a host of other issues.
The play, currently running on Broadway, is popular with critics and
audiences.
"When you put them down on paper, you hope people are going to like
them," Letts says of his plays.
His previous works include the dark-tinged Off-Broadway potboilers
"Killer Joe" and "Bug." His third play, "Man from Nebraska" was a
contender for the Pulitzer.
"August: Osage County," which marks Letts' Broadway debut, is a
three-act, three-hour comedy-drama, which many critics hailed as
a quantum leap for the author.
"It felt huge when I was writing it," said Letts. "But it all feels
like part of a process. One play leads to another. It all feels of
a piece to me."
The author's new work, "Superior Donuts," which he describes as "a
little donut shop comedy," begins performances at Steppenwolf in June.
Letts' father Dennis, a retired professor and actor, made his Broadway
debut in the play. He died in February.
"My father was assured about this Pulitzer," says Letts. "He told me
point blank that I'd win this [#$@*^%$] thing. It's bittersweet."
A small committee of theater critics and artists determines nominated
finalists, and the Pulitzer board picks a winner. Finalists included
"Yellow Face" by David Henry Hwang and "Dying City" by Christopher Shinn.
The Pulitzer prize includes a $10,000 award.
