這篇有訪問其它劇作家或導演～ :D [有上色] Nobel prize for Playwright Pinter An "overwhelmed" Harold Pinter won the Nobel Prize for literature today and then promptly announced he was giving up playwrighting. In awarding the prize, the Swedish Academy praised Pinter, 75, for restoring the play as an art form. "I have written 29 plays and I think that's really enough," said Pinter after a champagne celebration with his wife Lady Antonia Fraser at their London home. "I think the world has had enough of my plays. "I shall certainly be writing more poetry and I'll certainly remain deeply engaged in the question of political structures in this world." Pinter is one of the most influential British playwrights of his generation and famous for work such as The Room, The Birthday Party, and The Caretaker. He has written more than 25 plays plus cinema screenplays including The French Lieutenant's Woman, The Accident, The Servant and The Go-Between. Inventive Pinter is credited with the invention of a new dramatic style known as the comedy of menace. The literary term Pinteresque describes a kind of challenging psychological drama featuring characters that may represent each other's fears, insecurities or latent sexuality. The Academy said: "Pinter restored theatre to its basic elements: an enclosed space and unpredictable dialogue where people are at the mercy of each other and pretence crumbles." Leaning on a cane outside his London home and sporting a bandaged head after a fall he admitted feeling very grateful and "quite overwhelmed". The frail but defiant writer, who has been recovering from cancer of the oesophagus, is an outspoken radical who has already turned down John Major's offer of a knighthood. He is the first Briton to win the literature award since V.S. Naipaul in 2001 and used the spotlight of his victory to blast the Government - again - over the Iraq war. "I think the world is going down the drain if we're not very careful," he said. "Iraq is just a symbol of the attitude of western democracies to the rest of the world." Deserved Playwright Sir Tom Stoppard said the award was "wholly deserved and I'm completely thrilled". He added: "As a writer, Harold has been unswerving for 50 years. "With his earliest work he stood alone in British theatre up against the bewilderment and incomprehension of critics, the audience and writers too." The fact that he brought the theatre around the corner was a test of his character as well as his artistry." Actor, writer and director Sir Alan Ayckbourn, who appeared in a production of The Caretaker directed by Pinter, said: "It couldn't have happened to a nicer person and it's a most fitting award." British playwright David Hare said: "This is a brilliant choice. "Not only has Harold Pinter written some of the outstanding plays of his time, he has also blown fresh air into the musty attic of conventional English literature, by insisting that everything he does has a public and political dimension. "He's been both an example and an inspiration to us all." Theatre director Sir Peter Hall, who has worked with Pinter for more than 40 years, said the award was "a great prize for a great and original poet of the theatre". Background Pinter was born in Hackney in 1930, the only son of immigrant Jews who ran a tailor's shop in Stoke Newington, north London. His childhood was interrupted by the outbreak of the war in 1939, when he was evacuated to rural Cornwall. The separation from his loving parents, while traumatic, proved another source for his active imagination and introspection. He was 14 before he returned to London, by which point he had developed a love of the works of Franz Kafka and Ernest Hemingway. Pinter's first love was acting - and this week it was announced that he is to act in a production of Krapp's Last Tape by Samuel Beckett at London's Royal Court Theatre. He began to publish poetry in 1950, but continued to appear on the stage in repertory theatre until 1957. It was during this period that the frustrated Pinter began to write for the stage and The Room was published in 1957. A year later his first full-length play, The Birthday Party, was produced in the West End. Although it closed after just one week following disastrous reviews, Pinter continued to write at a rapid rate. He has been less prolific in recent years and he recently appeared to suggest he had written his last play, saying: "I think I've stopped writing plays now, but I haven't stopped writing poems." Playwright and former Czech President Vaclav Havel sent Pinter a telegram declaring: "You have no idea how I happy I am that you have won the Nobel Prize in literature. "I think you absolutely deserve it." The Prime Minister's official spokesman said: "Of course, we would congratulate Harold Pinter on the recognition he has received."
