Waiting for Godot and The Chairs

The Room, and The Birthday Party (by Pinter)
The Homecoming and
The Dumb Waiter
The Chairs
Waiting for Godot
The couple parallels the two tramps. Both pairs of
characters are “waiting” for someone or something
that will change their condition , bring meanings
to their life, and carry the message for them.
For Beckett, there is no such a person or a thing that
can fulfill such a desire and longing; that is why Godot
never appears. We humans can do nothing about the fruitless,
purposeless existence. And Ionesco seems to express
the same idea in a different way. Godot finally shows up in “The
Chairs’ in the name of the orator, who the old couple are desperately
expecting. The orator is supposed to send or carry messages about the
meaning of life. Ironically and poignantly, it turns out that he is
both dumb and deaf. What he can make is only blurring sounds
without any meanings. I feel the human situation in The Chairs
is more depressing and saddening because it is very certain that
there is no hope left while at least the two tramps can keep waiting.
