Hsieh and Rezai scored upset wins over Sybille Bammer (19) and Tatiana Golovin (13) respectively in the previous round, so both came into this third-round match in top form. Hsieh found her rhythm immediately, gaining an early double break to lead 4-0. Rezai's inconsistent serving and impatience let her down in the first set as Hsieh chased down every ball and frustrated the big-hitting Rezai. Hsieh won the first set in just 29 minutes. The trend continued in the second set with Hsieh gaining an early break to lead 2-0. This time, however, Rezai responded immediately, breaking back to level at 2-all. Numerous unforced errors and a lapse in concentration from Rezai, saw Hsieh race away to a 5-2 lead and serve for the match. Hsieh could not close out the match though when Rezai picked up her game and found the lines. Rezai broke twice to take the second set to a tie-break, which she convincingly won 7-3. Both girls traded service games early in the final set, before Rezai's unforced-error count entered into double figures and allowed Hsieh another 5-2 lead. Although she pulled one break back, Rezai could not stop Hsieh from winning the encounter with her sixth match point. Hsieh's gutsy victory sets up a daunting fourth-round clash with the No.1 seed and 2004 Australian Open champion Justine Henin.
