In a match that lasted about two hours, the two 18-year olds, who know each other’s strengths and weaknesses well, slugged it from the baseline. Although they have played each other many times, Chan has only succeeded in beating her only in one match. In 2003 alone, Chuang has beaten Chan three times in the quarterfinal stages of tournaments in Nakhorn Ratchasima and Nonthaburi (both in Thailand) and in Seoul, Korea. Chuang is presently ranked 316 while Chan is 411. Chuang’s aggression at the net was noticeably absent and she benefited from Chan’s unforced errors. Chuang focused on wearing down her opponent by moving her from side to side and when she clinched the title, there was no emotion from either player as they hugged each other and moved off the court. It was perhaps regrettable that one of two good friends had to lose. In the post-match interview, Chuang said she played her match as she would have against any opponent. She promised that she will do her best to do Asia proud at the Australian Open. Besides the wild card to the Australian Open, Chuang wins US$7,200 in prize money. --
