The annual seal hunt off the north coast of Newfoundland is underway amid poor ice conditions, a weaker market and limited participation by local hunters. With a ban on seal products firmly in place in much of Europe, the 400-year-old industry hasn't seen hard times like this since the late 1980s when Ottawa outlawed the killing of young, white-coated harp seals. A spokeswoman for an animal welfare group says she spotted only four boats heading to the floes off St. Anthony on Monday morning. The department issued a statement saying 28 boats were taking part in the hunt, a far cry from the hundreds of vessels that set sail when pelt prices peaked at over $100 in 2006. 三、 多益英檢文法整理 1. annual(adj):年度的，seal(N、V):海豹（或harp seal）、印章、密封， Newfoundland:加拿大紐芬蘭，underway(adv):進行地，participation(N):參與， ban(N):禁令，in place:實施，outlaw(V):判定非法，spokeswoman(N):發言人， welfare(N):福利，spot(V、N):看見、點，head to:朝向，floe(N):浮冰，take part:參 與，far cry:相差甚遠，vessel(N:船艦、容器，pelt(N):動物毛皮。 2. poor(adj):貧窮的，例如 A. They provided food and shelter for the poor. B. Johnny's poor performance on the test was because he had flu. （品質欠佳） C. She's a good teacher but a poor manager. （不擅長） D. to be in poor health/condition (身體不好；情況不佳) 3. 4. outlaw(V):是指判定某事為違法，等於ban(禁止)或make illegal， outbreak(爆發)、outclass(擊敗)、outgrow(成長)、outline(概述)。
