But it wasn't until Iwamura tore through major league pitching during the 2004 U.S.-Japan All-Star Series that the five-time Japanese League All-Star knew America was his land of opportunity. Iwamura lined two singles off Roger Clemens during one game and finished the series with a .440 batting average. Afterward, he traded jerseys with Tampa Bay Devil Rays left fielder Carl Crawford. Now, the two will wear the same uniform. The 27-year-old third baseman became a Devil Ray on Friday when the two sides agreed on a three-year contract with an option for a fourth season that could be worth nearly $12 million. "This is a tremendous day for the Devil Ray organization," Rays executive vice president Andrew Friedman said. Not only did the Rays increase their presence in Japan, signing their second player from that country in as many years, they also felt they made themselves a better ballclub. "For next year and for years down the line," Friedman said. While Iwamura won six Gold Gloves at third base during his nine seasons with the Yakult Swallows, Friedman said the Rays will use spring training to decide where Iwamura fits in their lineup. "His versatility is one of the things that really attracted us to him," Friedman said. Iwamura played mostly third base during his professional career in Japan, but said through an interpreter he has played first base, second and the corner outfield spots. "I'm up for the challenge of playing center field if the team asks me," Iwamura said. Which is good, because the Rays might ask him to do just that. "I would not put a specific position on him at this time," Friedman said. "All we've done is add flexibility on the roster. We've added depth. That's a good thing." Where Iwamura plays depends on what happens between now and spring training. The Rays are in a better position to push second baseman Jorge Cantu or third baseman B.J. Upton in trade talks. "We hope to be active," Friedman said when asked about further offseason moves. The 5-foot-9, 176-pound Iwamura, who bats left-handed, hit .300 during his career with Yakult with 188 home runs and 570 RBIs. He hit a career-high 44 home runs in 2004 and had 30 and 32 during the last two seasons, respectively. Friedman said he expects Iwamura's power numbers to decline somewhat in the bigger major league ballparks, yet he also expects his ability to drive the ball in the gap to remain the same. The Rays, who signed relief pitcher Shinji Mori to a two-year $1.4 million contract before last season and subsequently lost him to an injured shoulder in spring training, paid $4.55 million for the rights to negotiate with Iwamura. They are scheduled to pay him $1.8 million in 2007, $2.4 million in 2008 and $3.25 million in 2009. The Rays will pay Iwamura a base salary of $4.25 million should they pick up his 2010 option, or they could buy him out for $250,000 and Iwamura would become a free agent. Those numbers for 2010 could increase to $5.25 salary and $750,000 buyout depending on the amount of Iwamura's plate appearances during the first three seasons.
