With less than two seconds left, Fisher jumped to defend a 3-point shot by Brent Barry, then made contact with Barry on the way down after the Spurs guard pump-faked and twisted to get rid of the ball. Barry’s shot missed its mark, sealing the Lakers’ victory. Joey Crawford, who was suspended by the league for ejecting Tim Duncan from a game last season and who issued Gregg Popovich a technical foul during the Western Conference semifinals, was the closest official to the play. No foul was called, but an NBA spokesman told the Express-News on Wednesday that the officials erred. “With the benefit of instant replay,” the spokesman said, “it appears a foul should have been called.” Earlier Wednesday, Popovich was asked if the no-call was an example of how referees back away from making calls at crunch time. “Officials will tell you no,” Popovich said. “But it’s a very strange thing. An official will tell you the game is called at the end of the game exactly like it is during the meat of the game, and that’s their story and they are going to stand by it. “In reality, I don’t think that’s true, and I could give a thousand examples that things are called differently down the stretch, where I think most referees feel, and I agree with them, that things need to be more definitive before you are going to make a call. A referee is going to be hesitant to make a call that can decide a game at the end of the game unless it is really either gross or obvious. “That’s why I said that if I was an official I would not have called that a foul last night.” Horry not making excuses: Spurs forward Robert Horry isn’t using a troublesome knee as an excuse for his struggles in the Western Conference finals. Horry, 37, had excess fluid drained from his left knee Monday. The procedure was a first for the 16-year veteran. “I’m fine. I can’t blame anything on the knee,” Horry said Wednesday. Horry scored his first and only points against the Lakers on a pair of free throws Tuesday. He missed his only two shots from the field, leaving him 0 for 9 for the series. Spurs coach Gregg Popovich laughed when a reporter suggested Horry’s knee problem has prevented him from getting any “lift” when he shoots. “With all due respect to my good buddy Robert, he hasn’t had ‘lift’ for a few years. I’m not sure the knee draining did that,” Popovich joked. Crowded field: Spurs assistant Mike Budenholzer apparently has plenty of competition for the Suns’ head-coaching job. According to the team’s Web site, the list of candidates has grown to double figures. Suns general manager Steve Kerr is expected to interview Budenholzer as soon as the Spurs finish with the playoffs. “Mike Budenholzer is someone I have an awful lot of respect for,” Kerr told Suns.com. “He’s done a great job with the Spurs and has a lot to offer.” Popovich gave Budenholzer a ringing endorsement Wednesday. “Bud is a quality human being and somebody who really understands the game and would make a fine coach in the NBA without a doubt,” Popovich said. Ratings bonanza: According to TNT, the network’s coverage of Game 4 was the most-watched and highest-rated NBA game on cable this season and the second-most-watched NBA telecast of the year, trailing ABC’s coverage of Game 7 of the second-round series between the Celtics and Cavaliers. Game 4 of the Spurs-Lakers resulted in a 4.8 rating, meaning more than 5.3 million households tuned in. No love for Bowen: Even after they had returned home with a 3-1 series lead, the Lakers couldn’t resist needling the officiating crew and Spurs forward Bruce Bowen on Wednesday. Kobe Bryant, who attempted 29 field goals but didn’t take a single foul shot, was asked if he thought the officials were simply letting the teams play. “I don’t know about that,” Bryant said. “That’s one of the mysteries of the world.” And Lakers coach Phil Jackson continued his thinly veiled criticism of Bowen, who Jackson suggests gets away with putting his hands on opponents without getting whistled for it. “Bowen’s faster than the eyes in that regard,” Jackson said. “You’ve got to give him credit.
