The Spanish pair proved too strong for the Peruvians, coming out on top 64 64 76. However, if you had entered the court at the end of the third set, you would have thought Peru were about to win the match, not struggling to win their first set in the entire tie. The 5,000 crowd roared their support, chanting “ yes we can, yes we can” as a mantra to their players. However, in the end it was not enough to defeat the powerful Spanish couple, but it summarized in a single moment what the Davis Cup really is about. Horna struggling with an injury In the opening set, Horna was obviously still in pain from the right forearm that stopped him from playing yesterday, and Miranda was trying in vain to adjust to the power and speed of Lopez and Verdasco. The skill of the Spanish duo was just too much for the Peruvians, as the visitors broke serve in the third game, cruising to win the set. Although both home players raised their level in the second set, it was basically a repetition of the first. At that point Horna and especially Miranda suddenly realised they had to give it their all and managed to hold their serve. The closest they were to a break was in the ninth game at 30-30 on Lopez’s serve, but a fast exchange of strokes at the net ended up in a point for Spain. Horna put his hands to his face realising the opportunity he had thrown away, and the set went on, reaching the tie break. Verdasco took charge of his team and went on to win the tie break, the match and clinch Spain's place in the World Group quarterfinals. “We are sad as we lost the game", Horna said. “No matter how much you lose, whether in straight sets or a close five-setter, we lost anyway and we are sad because of that”. There was disappointment in the Peruvian camp, but also the acknowledgement that Spain had been the better team and that they deserved to win. “Now I will clear my head of Davis Cup for a while, I want to forget about it ”, Horna said. “I will work hard to regain the ranking I believe I should have and then I will think about Davis Cup again”. Jaime Yzaga, Peru’s captain, tried to be positive. “This is an important experience for our team, now we know for sure what it means to be in the World Group and I hope our next tie ends up with a better result”. Superb teamwork from Spain Spain on the other hand were ecstatic and the whole team turned up at the press conference elated about their victory. “We are happy for winning this series,” captain Emilio Sanchez said. “I want to congratulate Fernando (Verdasco) and Feliciano (Lopez) for their job today. These two guys are always there for the team; Fernando is a good teammate, always throwing in his support, and Feliciano came here at the last minute, when David (Ferrer) got injured; I called him last week and less than a day later he was on the plane. That is commitment, and they have had their reward today”. Lopez also paid tribute to the fight that the Peruvians had put up. “This is a great experience for them; it’s their first time on the World Group, and although they lost with us today, it’s very hard to get here, too many qualifying stages, so I hope they can get a lucky draw next September and play at home, with the support of their own people, and keep their place in the World Group”. As for the dead rubber singles tomorrow, Yzaga confirmed that Horna was not fit to play and would definitely be replaced, while a decision on Miranda would be taken later in the day.
