Hamburg, 19 May 2007 Press Conference with CARLOS MOYA Federer - Moya 4:6, 6:4, 6:2 Q: Well played. Do you think you played a pretty good match there? MOYA: Yes. It's never easy to play Federer. I felt I was controlling the match pretty well. But with him you can never expect that the match is over until you finally beat him. I think I had chances and the feeling is that today was a good chance to beat him, but I could not make it. Q: It's been a very good week for you though, isn't it? MOYA: Yes, excellent. Now I'm a little disappointed because I had the feeling that I could have even gotten further. But next week when I'm going to look back at this week, I realize that it was an excellent week and that I am on the right way to be a better player and to improve my ranking. Q: Did you feel your 3-set match from yesterday? MOYA: You mean if I was tired? Q: Yes. MOYA: Obviously, I was not as fresh as I was the first day. But I felt better than I expected. So, that's not an excuse. Q: You just spent 2 hours on court with Roger. He has lost the last two tournaments that he has entered. Being out there, do you sense that there is not quite that same strength about him that has been for the last year? MOYA: I can only say that when the match gets to an important moment he brings out his best. I had a few breakpoints to go up in the second and third and he played great tennis there. In that sense he's still the same player. To be honest I'm not the right person to say if he is the same player as he used to be or if he isn't. He is still No. 1 in the world and it's normal that after 3 years maybe he feels a little bit tighter. But to me he's still the best. Q: It does seem that Raffa's clay court record and the fact that the French means so much to Roger. Do you get any sense that this is weighing heavily on him right now? You know Raffa very well. MOYA: He respects Roger a lot and when he gets to the court against him, he doesn't think that he's the favourite. Obviously he has beaten him every time on clay. But he is not that confident that he is going to beat him every single match they will play. In that sense he respects Roger a lot and he never believes that he steps on the court as the favourite. Q: Do you honestly think that Roger is capable of beating Nadal on clay? MOYA: We are talking about Roger. To me Raffa is the best clay court player. He has had such a good record. But on a given day, talking about Roger, he is able to beat any player on any surface. He plays well, he was very close to doing it last year. Raffa will be more favourite to me, but of course he has chances to beat Raffa. Q: You said that you had the feeling you had a chance to go further. Was this also because you felt you were playing well as much as that Roger was a little bit down? MOYA: I think today was the day for me to beat him. I never did it before. During the match I felt that there was a good chance, but it did not happen. It happened that he played his best in the right moments and I didn't. But the first set, I am very happy the way I played. I was playing very deep with my backhand, hitting winners with my forehand. So, I was very pleased. Maybe things could have changed a little bit if I broke his serve in that game in the second set. I played a good point, but again he hit an unbelievable backhand and then he was playing well again. To me, I had a good chance today, but it's never enough against such a good champion as he is. Q: How well can you do at the French? MOYA: I will have to play the way I've been playing this week. But in tennis you never know what is going to happen. Obviously I'm well prepared now. I will go there with a lot of confidence, knowing that I'm able to play well and to beat good players. That's the best thing that can happen getting to a Grand Slam. Q: In which way do you think Raffa is better than Roger on clay? MOYA: I don't know. Raffa is very solid. I cannot say in what part of the game Raffa is better than Federer. Both are great players. Maybe Raffa is a little bit more solid, but Federer is also very talented.
