by Paul Gough Monday, 15 January, 2007 The Australian Open men's singles got off to a dramatic start on Day One when two players were forced to retire due to injury just minutes into their first round matches. Spain's No.24 seed Juan Carlos Ferrero was on court for just six minutes before advancing to the second round when his opponent Czech Jan Hajek pulled out with a stomach upset with the 2003 French Open winner leading 3-0 in the first set. And at virtually the same time as Hajek was deciding that he could no longer continue, Sweden's big-serving Joachim Johansson was also forfeiting his first round match to another Spaniard in Guillermo Garcia-Lopez with the score at 1-1 in the first set. For Johansson his first round retirement continued a frustrating recent run with injury for a player who won two ATP titles in 2005, including Adelaide. Johansson missed most of last year with shoulder and elbow injuries and saw his ranking plummet from 45 to 196 as a result and he was also forced to retire from last week's tournament in Sydney due to blisters. The same problem saw him withdraw from the first match of his Australian Open 2007 campaign. Just 15 points were played in the Ferrero-Hajek match and just 18 in the Johansson-Garcia-Lopez match. Ferrero, a semifinalist at Melbourne Park in 2004, was shocked to advance to the second round so quickly. "I didn't really expect to win like this," he said. "I heard before the match that maybe he (Hajek) was a bit sick but I expected to play at least one or two sets." Ferrero said he had mixed feelings about advancing to the second round so quickly. "In one way it's good because you win through (to the next round) but sometimes it's better to play three sets to get some sort of rhythm going."
