Fifth-seed Juan Carlos Ferrero reached the quarterfinals of the Synsam Swedish Open by defeating fellow Spaniard and frequent practice partner Guillermo Garcia-Lopez 6-3, 6-4 Thursday. Ferrero, who competes in Bastad for the first time in his career, finds himself among the last eight for the fourth time in 2005. "We played a great match today," said Ferrero after the victory. "We practice together all year at my academy in Spain. It's difficult to play matches against friends but we both know that we have to play matches like that on the tour," continued the 25-year-old Villena-resident. On Friday Ferrero faces countryman and topseed Rafael Nadal, who outplayed Alberto Martin 6-2, 6-4 in the second match on center court. Nadal has captured six titles in 2005, most notably Roland Garros, and following today's win he has an impressive 51-8 record for the year.The Mallorcan teenager holds a 2-0 record against Ferrero, and both matches took place this season, in the Barcelona final and in the first round in Valencia. "In Valencia I played really badly. In Barcelona I played really well against him, but he played amazing tennis and didn't miss a ball," said Ferrero when asked about his two previous losses against Nadal. "Tomorrow I'll make some small changes and hopefully change the score," he continued. "Ferrero is one of the best players in the world, especially on clay," said Nadal about his upcoming opponent. "In Valencia he was very nervous, playing in his home town. In Barcelona I played a really good match. But right now he's playing really good tennis.
