The Spaniard was beaten in straight sets by compatriot Fernando Verdasco, 6-1, 6-2, 7-5. The 23-year-old from Barcelona looked nothing like the player who had reached the French Open quarter-finals just two weeks ago; instead he looked distracted and only occasionally troubled by an opponent who is ranked more than 40 places below him. In stark contrast, world No.58 Verdasco looked like a man on a mission in front of a lively crowd on Court 18. The 21-year-old from Madrid raced through the first two sets, 6-1, 6-2, with a combination of powerful serving, accurate volleying and vicious groundstrokes. Robredo's lack of expertise on grass ruthlessly exposed. Robredo, who reached the third round of The Championships in 2003, looked disheartened that Verdasco could match everything he threw at him. However, with the encouragement of the crowd at the sun-kissed All England Lawn Tennis Club, Robredo finally began to find some form in the third set. He changed his baseline game to an alien serve-and-volley style of play that he perhaps should have employed earlier. The No.13 seed won 60% of points when he approached the net and managed to cause Verdasco some problems. However, for all Robredo's effort he could not make the vital breakthrough and on Verdasco's strong serve. The first 10 games, which were very close, went with serve until Verdasco earned a vital break at 5-5 with a sizzling cross-court forehand that left Robredo stranded and bewildered. Robredo had a slight glimmer of hope in the next game when he had an opportunity to break back immediately, however Verdasco quickly stifled Robredo's challenge and held serve to take the match. Fernando Verdasco will now play either Germany's Florian Mayer or Spain's Santiago Ventura in the second round on Wednesday.
