09 June 2005 Local hero Alexander Waske came within inches of another stunning upset at the GERRY WEBER OPEN but 2003 French Open champion Juan Carlos Ferrero scraped through with a close 7-6 (5), 6-7 (7), 6-3 victory. One day after halting Rafael Nadal’s winning streak at 24, strong-serving Waske delivered 21 aces. He lost his serve in the seventh game of the third set after a costly foot-fault that made it 0-30. "I spoke to Juan Carlos afterwards and we both agreed that this was the turning point," a defiant Waske said. "Once again I played well but lost. I can’t believe I lost the tiebreak in the first set despite serving four straight aces so I think he really deserved to win." Ferrero, up 5-3 and serving for the match, kept his cool and also deflected Waske’s eighth break point with an ace on the second serve. "I take my hat off to him," added Waske. "What a great way to respond to pressure." Ferrero, in the meantime, believes he got what it takes to win the tournament. "I never said I don’t enjoy playing on grass. There are a lot of good players in the tournament. However, I feel like I have chances to win here." Wild card entry Waske now shifts his attention to the Wimbledon qualification round.
