Two weeks later, Shapovalov's tennis career, and his life, forever changed. Granted a wild card at the Rogers Cup in Montreal, Shapovalov went on to stun Rafael Nadal en route to becoming the youngest semifinalist in a Masters 1000 event. Less than a month after that, Shapovalov reached the Round-of-16 at the U.S. Open. Shapovalov’s performance during last year's North American hardcourt swing served as an early coming-out party for the now 19-year-old. As he returns to Washington – the site of his ATP main draw debut in 2016 – Shapovalov is up to No.27 in the ATP world rankings. He is also the top-ranked Canadian and the youngest player on the circuit ranked in the Top-100. The lefty with the can't-miss blond locks and a one-handed backhand has been predicted by many pundits as a future Grand Slam champion. In 2016, Shapovalov won the Junior Boys' Wimbledon title. This week's voyage to D.C. is the ATP's final stop before the 2018 Rogers Cup, where Shapovalov will have rankings points to defend and perhaps some added pressure to win in his own backyard. The Citi Open could serve as an ideal tune-up, especially as the Toronto native looks to rebound from a sluggish grass court season that saw him win two matches in four events. Shapovalov is the No.9 seed in D.C. and has a first-round bye. He could potentially face one of Stan Wawrinka or Kei Nishikori in the third round. Shapovalov is one of two Canadians who earned automatic entry into the Citi Open main draw, along with 2014 finalist Vasek Pospisil. --
