They might put on their lucky socks, wear their lucky underpants, or slip their lucky penny into their pocket. Even though these things have no control over whether the athlete wins the game or not, many people, athletes among them, are superstitious. Believing in a lucky charm, whether true or not, leads to greater confidence. It isn't the fulfillment of the superstition that wins the game - it's the confidence the routine can bring.
