“Mic is my man -
Taiwanese singer Sandee Chan flirts with the microphone
and teases with indie edge”
Sandee Chan may not be conventionally beautiful. But at her first gig here,
most hot-blooded men in the audience must have wished that they were her
microphone stand.Dressed in a flapper-like black tulip dress, with a glittery
fascinator in her hair, the Taiwanese alternative singer-songwriter caressed
her mic stand with graceful, expressive fingers, while slinking urgently
through her respectable back catalogue like a diva in a funhouse. It was her
silent partner through smooth, jazzy numbers.
And when switching things up with some goth and nu-metal pieces, she leaned
casually on it like it was an inconsequential man.Throughout the two-hour,
encore-less concert, she channelled her dark, inner-chanteuse - from the
sensual opener, Enka, with its melancholic bossa nova vibe, to the heavy
pounding vibe of A Tale Of Two Chens - lightening up occasionally with sweet,
girly tunes such as Distance (which she sung while a male fan plucked from
the audience stood longingly beside her on stage) and breezy closer Good
Scenery. On uptempo, raging, guitar distortion-heavy segments, brewed up by
her hip, emo-haired five-piece band, she was the calm at the eye of the storm,
pinning her listeners like mounted butterflies with a voice that slipped
from alto to ethereal in a nanosecond.Chan’s bewitching indie edge makes her
the underground princess of Mandopop. In fact, her fans refer to her as
‘gong zhu’ (Mandarin for princess), write academic papers on her music
and use her official online forum as public psychotherapy. It is this
propensity for kookiness, along with her trademark surprising mid-song key
changes, that stop some of her pop compositions from slipping into the
generic and maudlin.Witness what she did with the song Perfume, a hit which
she wrote for Hong Kong singer-actor Nicholas Tse. Given her sinuous
treatment, complete with dying falls, the song morphed from a straightforward
love song into a nuanced, menacing masterpiece. At the end of a tune-packed
evening, she gleefully suggested to a satisfied audience, which unfortunately
filled only half the venue, that they go home and post glowing reviews on
their blogs. ‘So that those who didn’t come will feel regret,’ she added.
Beguilingly evil-minded and cheekily magical, this princess must be hailed
and obeyed.
