From my point of view, a friend in need is mentally essential, after all, people can barely be endurant of being without friends in their lives. As mentioned above, rational people would choose friends according to their needs, or vaguely speaking, to the characteristics they like. For me, reliability is the primal characteristic I would emphasize when making friends. Between among all virtues of human beings, reliability is a basic indicator that tells you whether you can trust him or not, on things he says or does, reliability also requires honesty and effectiveness to some extent. A true friend of mine must be reliable so that I can seek help from him or her without worrying if I should turn to others, or telling secrets without taking betrayl into consideration. I do not like people who lie or are not capable of what they have promised and just eat their words later. because the behavior like this harm the friendship much and it leads to more distance between two people, because people estimate how much respect and intimacy can be laid on from his reliability, if someone is not expected of being serious about his words,should I be the one who still take it serious? It surely is even more lucky to have a friend with all good characteristics, but the fact is that there is no perfection and we do not need perfect people as friends, the very core of definiton of "friend" is someone who understand you and is willing to share the life experience with you. closer friends will do more for each other without calculating the pay back.
