PETERSBURG, FL, USA - Jelena Jankovic is the eighth and final player to qualify for the Sony Ericsson Championships - Doha 2009, set to take place for the second year at the Khalifa International Tennis Complex in Doha, Qatar, from October 27 to November 1. The world's Top 8 singles players and Top 4 doubles teams from the 2009 Sony Ericsson WTA Tour season will compete for the coveted season-ending title and a share of the $4.55 million prize money. Jankovic completes an all-star line-up that features Dinara Safina, Serena Williams, Elena Dementieva, Caroline Wozniacki, Svetlana Kuznetsova, Venus Williams and Victoria Azarenka. Vera Zvonareva and Agnieszka Radwanska will be alternates and will also travel to Doha. "I am really happy about making it to the Sony Ericsson Championships for the third time in my career," Jankovic said. "It is always a nice feeling to end the season playing in the Championships as one of the best eight players in the world. I look forward to returning to Doha and playing some great matches." On the heels of a breakthrough 2008 season, which she finished at No.1, Jankovic had another strong season in 2009, winning titles at Marbella and Cincinnati and reaching another final at Tokyo (falling to Maria Sharapova). She beat Safina in the Cincinnati final for her first win over a reigning No.1; with Safina, she was also one of three players to hold the top spot this year (also Serena Williams). In her first two appearances at the Championships, Jankovic fell in the round robin stage in 2007 and in the semifinals last year. When the rankings are released on Monday, October 26, Safina will be ranked No.1 and therefore the top seed at the season-ending event. After holding the top ranking for 25 consecutive weeks (April 20 to October 11), she will replace Serena Williams at the top when points earned at Doha last year come off. In 2009, Safina has earned more ranking points than anyone else. Cara Black and Liezel Huber, the Williams sisters, Nuria Llagostera Vives and María José Martínez Sánchez and Samantha Stosur and Rennae Stubbs are the four qualifying teams for the doubles competition. --
