Tipsarevics respond to match-fixing allegations from Spain
Janko’s shoulder injury cause of withdrawal
Author: Z. Kecman | 24.07.2009 - 10:00
All tennis and especially Janko Tipsarevic fans from Serbia have received a
piece of unsettling news from Spain. Local daily newspaper Sport, reporting on
the tennis match between Oscar Hernandez and Tipsarevic played at the ATP
tournament in Stuttgart on 15 July, questions the integrity of the encounter.
The allegations have shocked everyone, including Tipsarevic himself, while the
Serbian tennis star is yet to make any public address regarding the issue.
Hernandez won
the match 6-4 6-4, which was
the cause of suspicion among the
Spanish media, as Tipsarevic had been a clear favourite to win the match,
although assuming a lower ATP rankings spot at the time. At some point before
the match, bookies began to receive large sums from people betting that the
Spaniard would win in straight sets, which was the reason for the Spanish
Tennis Integrity Unit and Gaming Commission to launch an investigation into the
matter, as reported by Sport on Wednesday.
Janko’s father, Pavle Tipsarevic, says his son is shocked and appalled by the
news from Spain and that he can’t believe what he is cked and appalled by the
news from Spain and that he can’t believe what he is being accused of all the
while being plagued by a shoulder injury.
- “I was with Janko until a few minutes ago – we talked and he can’t believe
what’s happening.
Apart from the fact he is struggling with an injury this
season and that he is out of form, now all this has happened, which is
ridiculous. This is all farcical – anyone who knows Janko knows he is a great
sportsman and that
he would never even think of fixing a tennis match,” Pavle
Tipsarevic says for Blic.
The match-fixing claims from the Spanish press reached the Tipsarevic family in
the Canadian embassy in Belgrade.
- “We went to the embassy so that Janko could get the Canadian visa in order
to appear at the Montreal tournament. He’s been plagued by the right shoulder
injury since Wimbledon, but knows how important every single ATP point is for
him and
that is why he tried his best to play, albeit
through pain while
serving. It is, in fact, a tricky interior rupture of the shoulder muscle and
that’s what’s making him very nervous,” says Janko’s father Pavle.
Tipsarevic travelled to Germany after Wimbledon, where he tried to nurse the
injury in one of the most renown spas.
- “His coach Jose Perlas is on vacation. Janko went to Germany to try and heal
the injury.
It’s the summer holidays season and our domestic doctors are on
vacation, so it was best to do the MRI there. Then he trained for a week and,
to everyone’s surprise, he felt better. He had previously applied for the
tournaments in Stuttgart, Hamburg and Umag. An hour and a half before his match
against Hernandez in Stuttgart, he took to the court to test the shoulder and
it felt good. He played the match decently, but the Spaniard was better on the
day and beat him. Then Janko went to Hamburg, where he lost a three-setter from
Simon Greul.
He started to feel the pain from his shoulder again and that’s
why he’s cancelled his appearance at Umag, because he believes it would be
better to rest the shoulder in order to be able to play far tougher
hard-surface events, such as Montreal,” Pavle Tipsarevic explains.
There have been numerous media stories of match-fixing in tennis in the recent
years. Russia’s Nikolay Davydenko was the target of allegations once, but
after a year of media presence not a single irrefutable piece of evidence was
produced that would establish the Russian’s guilt.
- “I don’t know who benefits from offering stories like this. My assumption
is that some people might have found out about Janko’s injury and therefore
decided to bet against him. And then bookmakers lost money. I see no other
explanation to this – no-one is that stupid to fix and sell matches. Janko has
never been a part of that world – he is a true sportsman. These allegations
are stupid and illogical, coming in the season when Janko is trying to become a
regular
top-50 player.
This is the third consecutive summer that he’s
struggling with injuries, and now this. We have nothing to be afraid of,
because our conscience is clear, and the Spanish press can write whatever they
like,” says Pavle Tipsarevic.
