http://0rz.tw/qP6fZ Giants gain ground with seventh straight win By Nick Kosmider / MLB.com | 9/18/2011 1:06 AM ET DENVER -- It is yet to be determined whether the Giants' desperate late-season push will result in a playoff spot. But either way, San Francisco is taking its fans on another exciting ride. The Giants rallied late on a chilly Saturday night at Coors Field, as Brett Pill's big night led the way in a 6-5 win over the Rockies. It was the seventh straight win for the Giants, who trail the National League West-leading D-backs -- who lost to the Padres, 3-1, on Saturday -- by five games with 10 to play. The Giants also trail the Braves by five games in the NL Wild Card race. Though the climb still seems just shy of monumental, things could get interesting if the Giants inch their way closer to the D-backs before the two teams meet for a three-game series in Arizona next weekend. "It's a situation where we've got to win games," Giants manager Bruce Bochy said. "We've got to keep going out there and doing our best to win ballgames, and you look at the end and see what happens. This is what we need to do." Pill drove in three runs with his first two career triples, including a two-run three-bagger off Huston Street with the game tied at 3 in the eighth. Pill, who is hitting .333 (7-for-21) in his first six Major League games, became the first Giant to hit two triples in a game since Fred Lewis accomplished the feat on May 19, 2008, also at Coors Field. "I don't think I've ever had two triples in my life," Pill said. "It was definitely hard to breathe when I got to third base." The runs off Street were the Giants' first off the Rockies reliever since 2006. Street had had thrown 18 2/3 scoreless innings against San Francisco with 17 strikeouts against one walk before Saturday's eighth inning. "The problem area for Huston tonight simply boils down to the inability to make a two-strike pitch," Rockies manager Jim Tracy said. The Giants faced a one-run deficit to begin the eighth, but Andres Torres led off with a single and Jeff Keppinger reached on a fielder's choice after Street's throwing error. Carlos Beltran then drove in Torres with a double to right, setting the stage for Pill's clutch at-bat. The Giants added an important insurance run in the inning when Pill beat the tag of Rockies catcher Wilin Rosario after Aubrey Huff's ground ball. Santiago Casilla gave up two runs in the ninth before finishing off his fifth save of the year. The four-run eighth helped the Giants overcome seven walks issued by their pitchers, including six (one intentional) by rookie starter Eric Surkamp. The lefty gave up one run on three hits, but he lasted just 4 2/3 innings, as the abundant walks led to a 95-pitch total. But Surkamp kept his team in the game, even adding to the cause with his first Major League hit, an RBI single that gave the Giants a 1-0 lead in the second. The Giants didn't get much else off Rockies rookie left-hander Drew Pomeranz, who gave up two runs over 5 2/3 innings. But with two outs in the sixth, Pomeranz walked Mark DeRosa before being replaced by right-hander Matt Belisle. Pill thought he might be lifted at that point for a left-handed hitter to face Belisle, but Bochy stayed with his rookie, who belted a triple off the right-field scoreboard that was nearly a home run, putting the Giants up, 2-1. Bochy was impressed by Pomeranz, who was the key piece in the Rockies' trade that sent Ubaldo Jimenez to Cleveland just before the non-waiver Trade Deadline. "Their kid threw very well," Bochy said of Pomeranz. "He's got good stuff, and it looks like they have a good one there." The Rockies jumped back in front on Dexter Fowler's two-run single in the sixth, but the Giants came up with a big rally in the eighth to keep their playoff hopes, however slim, alive. "We're playing good baseball," Torres said. "We just have to go out there and keep playing like we've been playing. We fee like we've got a shot at it."
