http://0rz.tw/1H04l MRI shows Schierholtz has fractured foot By Adam Berry / MLB.com | 08/23/11 10:46 PM ET SAN FRANCISCO -- Just when it seemed Nate Schierholtz had worked his way off the list of banged-up Giants, the outfielder was confined to a walking boot Tuesday after an MRI revealed a fracture in his right foot. Schierholtz initially sustained the injury when he fouled a ball off his foot Aug. 15 against the Braves. The left-handed hitter sat out the next day but played through the pain until Sunday. He then underwent an MRI scan that revealed a "crack" on the top, inside part of his right foot, he said, and a CT scan confirmed the fracture. "The whole last week, it was just sore," Schierholtz said, unsure if he aggravated the injury in a home-plate collision Sunday in Houston. He was awaiting X-ray results Tuesday afternoon to confirm the severity of the injury. Schierholtz was one of two candidates to take Carlos Beltran's place on the 15-day disabled list, but he was hoping he would not be out for too long. "I'd like to think it's not that bad," he said. With injuries affording him more consistent playing time, Schierholtz has had his most productive season in the Majors this year, posting career highs in hits (93), doubles (22), home runs (nine), RBIs (41), stolen bases (seven) and starts (77) while providing excellent defensive play at the corner outfield spots. Beltran activated, could start Wednesday SAN FRANCISCO -- The Giants activated outfielder Carlos Beltran from the disabled list Tuesday afternoon, though he wasn't in the starting lineup, and Beltran was hopeful he would be ready to start Wednesday night. "I'm going crazy. These 15 days for me have been hell, actually, because I cannot do anything," said Beltran, who has been nursing a strained right hand since Aug. 7. "But thank God we're passing that." The switch-hitting Beltran took early swings from both sides of the plate Monday and before Tuesday's series opener against the Padres. Giants manager Bruce Bochy said the All-Star outfielder will be available to pinch-hit -- though he wanted to avoid using him from the left side -- as well as pinch-run and serve as a defensive replacement. Bochy hoped to have Beltran in Wednesday's starting lineup against right-hander Tim Stauffer. Beltran has taken batting practice three days in a row, and he said he would be able to start if he felt like he did Monday and Tuesday morning. That's not to say Beltran was feeling 100 percent, however. His left-handed swing is more affected by the injury, but he was unsure if that pain would completely disappear anytime soon. "I don't know if, realistically, this pain is going to go away," Beltran said. "If I wait until I feel 100 percent, I don't know when that's going to be." Beltran feels fine taking right-handed cuts but admitted to still feeling some pain when swinging left-handed at high pitches. He still believed it was time to try to take the next step and get back on the field. "How's it going to feel when I swing and miss? I don't know. How's it going to feel when I chase a bad pitch? I don't know," Beltran said. "How's it going to feel when I check-swing? I don't know. That's a lot of things that I don't know how they're going to feel. But the only way to find out is just to test it, so hopefully everything goes well. "It's been disappointing a little bit not being able to play, not being able to be out there competing with the team. But at the same time, I was doing everything I can to try to make this pain go away faster. Just being able to be out there means a lot. This is what I wanted to be -- on a team that's fighting to go to the playoffs, and we have that opportunity. Even though we're playing not the best baseball, we're there. Arizona is not winning either, so this is about who wants it the most. Right now, we feel that we want to take the field every day and try to make this happen. I'm excited about it." Sprained ankle puts Sanchez on disabled list SAN FRANCISCO -- After missing his last turn in the rotation, left-hander Jonathan Sanchez was placed on the 15-day disabled list and will miss his next scheduled start as well. Giants manager Bruce Bochy said Sanchez, out with a high left ankle sprain, was "doubtul" to start Saturday against the Astros. Sanchez was wearing a walking boot on his left foot Tuesday afternoon, and Bochy said the lefty was struggling to push off the mound. His placement on the DL is retroactive to Aug. 17, the day after he suffered the injury. The Giants list Saturday's starter as "TBA," and Bochy said he couldn't answer who would likely take the mound in his place. The announcement was made official just before Tuesday night's game against the Padres, as the Giants were deciding whether Sanchez or Nate Schierholtz (fractured foot) would take Carlos Beltran's place on the disabled list. Sanchez injured his ankle a week ago in Atlanta when he left the mound to field a sacrifice bunt, awkwardly turning his ankle as he reached for the ball and threw to first base. Left-hander Dan Runzler was called up and made the start in Sanchez's place Sunday in Houston. The decision to place Sanchez on the disabled list was the safest option for the Giants. He is eligible to return Sept. 1, meaning he would only miss one scheduled start -- one he wouldn't be healthy enough to make anyway. Worth noting ‧ Right-hander Sergio Romo (sore right below) has begun throwing, Bochy said Tuesday. Romo is eligible to come off the disabled list Thursday. Closer Brian Wilson (inflamed right elbow) has not yet begun throwing, however. As he did on the club's road trip, Wilson once again declined to comment on his injury Tuesday. ‧ Catcher Eli Whiteside (concussion) is on track to return from the seven-day disabled list Thursday, saying he felt much better and would participate in all baseball activities with the Giants on Tuesday and Wednesday. Whiteside, who injured himself a week ago when sliding face-first into second base, said he began feeling better Friday and has been cleared by trainers to throw, hit, catch a bullpen and so on. Whiteside said he just didn't feel like himself the first few days after the concussion, and he didn't expect the injury to affect how he plays -- except for one thing: "I'll probably slide feet first for a while." ‧ Andres Torres, on the 15-day disabled list with a contusion on his lower right leg, has been hitting well on a rehab assignment with Triple-A Fresno and appears on track to return Sunday when his 15 days are up. ‧ Shortstop Orlando Cabrera felt well enough to start Tuesday after missing three starts with a groin injury, but Bochy opted to start Mike Fontenot -- and bat him leadoff against Padres right-hander Mat Latos.
