Wilson, San Francisco's three-time All-Star closer, has inflammation and a mild flexor strain in his throwing elbow. "They kind of go hand in hand," Giants head athletic trainer Dave Groeschner said. Groeschner said that Wilson will refrain from throwing for the next two or three days to concentrate on treatment. After that, the Giants might be able to estimate whether Wilson will be ready to pitch when he becomes eligible for activation from the DL on Aug. 31. But the Giants' concern for Wilson transcends the National League West race and their efforts to repeat as World Series champions. Wilson, 29, is integral to the core of talented pitchers that the organization believes can help the team contend for the next few seasons. Moreover, Wilson is signed for next year at $8.5 million. "Nobody wants to go on the disabled list right now. But we have to take care of him," Groeschner said. "It's not just these next six weeks, it's the next year and the year after." Said manager Bruce Bochy, "Long term, it's the best thing we can do for his career and us this year." Wilson reported discomfort after his most recent appearance, a blown save last Monday at Atlanta. Two days later, he visited Dr. James Andrews, the noted orthopedist who performed Wilson's Tommy John elbow surgery in 2003. Wilson underwent an MRI that confirmed the inflammation diagnosis. Reflecting his stubborn competitiveness -- "There's nobody in the clubhouse who wants to be out there more than him," Groeschner said -- Wilson tried playing catch Friday and Saturday without improvement in his condition. "He had some discomfort so there was no reason to keep going," Groeschner said. Wilson also began the season on the disabled list with a strained left side. Since then, he compiled a 6-4 record with a 3.19 ERA and 35 saves in 40 opportunities spanning 55 games. The Giants recalled right-hander Steve Edlefsen from Triple-A Fresno to fill Wilson's spot on the active roster. Replacing Wilson in the closer's role is a more critical issue. San Francisco's five losses in its previous six games have denied Bochy the opportunity to identify a reliever to preserve ninth-inning leads. Sergio Romo, whose otherworldly statistics make him a leading candidate to close, is on the disabled list with elbow inflammation. Bochy indicated that Jeremy Affeldt, who recorded three saves this season, might be a temporary fit for the role. Bochy also likes to seek favorable matchups, so he could call upon other relievers who have notched saves this season, including Javier Lopez (one), Guillermo Mota (one) and Ramon Ramirez (two). "Even with Romo down, we still have guys who have no problem pitching late in the ballgame," Bochy said. "In fact, that's when they want to pitch." Chris Haft is a reporter for MLB.com.
