Bloom / MLB.com | 06/14/11 9:05 PM ET PHOENIX -- Giants second baseman Freddy Sanchez is going to visit with local surgeon Dr. Gary Waslewski on Wednesday for a second opinion on his dislocated right shoulder. Sanchez said he's still hoping to avoid what could be season-ending surgery. "I want to play. I want to come back," he said before the Giants played the D-backs in a battle for first place in the National League West at Chase Field. "Hopefully, it will heal itself. If not, we're going to have to take the next step." Sanchez damaged his labrum and stretched out his shoulder capsule when he made a diving attempt on a ground ball Friday night in San Francisco during a victory over the Reds. An MRI on Saturday confirmed the extent of the injury and Sanchez was placed on the 15-day disabled list. Sanchez has had surgery on his left shoulder and missed the first six weeks of the 2010 season. That surgery repaired the labrum and the A/C joint and tightened the shoulder ligament on Dec. 23, 2009. Doctors told him he'd be out about six months so he beat that prognosis and returned about 30 days earlier. It's not certain how long Sanchez will take to recover if he has the surgery on his right shoulder. Waslewski is the same orthopedic surgeon one who did the previous surgeries on Sanchez and knows him better than anybody, he said. "I have to get with Freddy," Giants manager Bruce Bochy said. "He's getting another opinion and then he's going to decide what's best for him getting ready to play. That [surgery] is going to be up to him after he gets a second opinion and he sees what's best for his shoulder." Vogelsong cements spot in Giants rotation PHOENIX -- No matter what happens with left-hander Barry Zito and his rehab, Ryan Vogelsong will remain in the starting rotation, Giants manager Bruce Bochy said Tuesday. Vogelsong has been 4-1 with a 1.96 ERA, virtually since Zito sprained his right foot in a freak accident diving for a ball off the mound at Chase Field on April 16. He's been on the disabled list ever since. Will Vogelsong remain in that No. 5 slot? "Sure," Giants manager Bruce Bochy said before the Giants played the D-backs in a battle for first place in the National League West at Chase Field on Tuesday night. "It would be hard to move him anywhere the way he's thrown the ball. He's thrown the ball as well as anybody, so he's in the rotation." Zito makes his third rehab start Thursday night at Triple-A Fresno. He's about halfway through a 30-day rehab period, so there's still time before a decision must be made on his status. Zito seems to be getting closer after throwing seven innings in his last rehab outing. He was 0-1 with a 6.23 ERA in his three Major League starts before the injury. The Giants would seem to be limited in their choices of what to do with Zito when he must be reactivated: Put him in the bullpen, put him back in the rotation or simply move him off the roster. The latter is the most problematic because they still owe Zito more than $64.5 million of a $126 million contract. And there's no replacing any of the other four starters with Zito in the current rotation. "Yeah, they're sold," Bochy said. "You could go with a six-man [rotation] as some clubs do. You could put him in the 'pen as the long guy. We'll cross that [bridge] when we get there. The one thing is you could always skip a guy if he needs a break.
