Giants hoping to avoid surgery for F. Sanchez
By Chris Haft / MLB.com | 06/13/11 1:24 AM ET
SAN FRANCISCO -- Though surgery could await Giants second baseman Freddy
Sanchez, the club's medical staff will do all they can to skirt that
procedure to repair his dislocated right shoulder.
Giants head athletic trainer Dave Groeschner acknowledged Sunday night that
season-ending surgery is a "definite possibility" for Sanchez, who injured
himself while diving for a ground ball Friday night against Cincinnati. For
the immediate future, however, the Giants will treat Sanchez in what
Groeschner called "conservative" fashion before re-evaluating him in a couple
of weeks.
"We'll try to get him more comfortable and see where he is," said Groeschner,
maintaining hope that after exploring traditional methods, including
range-of-motion exercises, doctors might determine that Sanchez can heal on
his own. Among the physicians soon to be consulted is Dr. Gary Waslewski, the
Giants' Arizona orthopedist who performed arthroscopic surgery on Sanchez's
left shoulder last December.
Sanchez underwent a MRI on Saturday that confirmed the dislocation.
Groeschner acknowledged that Sanchez sustained damage to his labrum and
stretched the capsule that surrounds the shoulder and helps provide support.
"We'd like to avoid [surgery], but at this point we'll have to see,"
Groeschner said. "We have to make sure he's good for next year, too."
Sanchez, 33, signed a one-year, $6 million contract extension through 2012 on
April 1.
Groeschner said that even if Sanchez and the Giants had decided that he
should undergo surgery immediately, a couple of weeks must pass to let the
injured area "calm down."
