Working his way back from a fractured hamate bone in his right hand, Sandoval will travel to Salt Lake City to join Triple-A Fresno, in town for a four-game series that ends Sunday. Infielder Mike Fontenot (left groin strain) is also going to Salt Lake City on a rehab assignment, while outfielder Darren Ford is a little behind in his recovery from a left ankle sprain. Meanwhile, left-hander Barry Zito is set to make his second rehab start Saturday in Modesto, Calif., for Class A Advanced San Jose. Zito, out since mid-April with a sprained right foot, was sharp in his first rehab start, striking out six and walking none while allowing only two hits and one run in 6 2/3 innings. Sandoval, whose rehab started in San Jose but came to an abrupt end there due to a combination of wrist soreness and bad weather, also played in a Minor League game for Fresno on Tuesday night, driving in four runs and crushing a homer early on. He was back at AT&T Park on Wednesday, but he is now ready to get in more game work so he can return to the big league club when the Giants head to Arizona on Tuesday. The switch-hitter singled out his left-handed swing as the area that needs the most work. "I'll see how this weekend goes with my hands. I'm probably going to be back with the team in Arizona, and that was the plan," Sandoval said. "My goal is to be with the team." Sandoval's right wrist became an issue after his rehab game in San Jose last week, as he reported back to San Francisco and admitted he was sore after not hitting for so long. He was asked Wednesday afternoon if he was feeling pain or weakness in his arm, and he replied, "Pain, weakness -- both. "When your swing goes through, when you finish, when you make contact -- every move you do with your hands, you're going to be sore," Sandoval added. Adam Berry is an associate reporter for MLB.com.
