http://0rz.tw/40JC1 Lincecum leads Giants into first-place tie Ace hurls seven innings, hits two-run single; Posey goes yard By Chris Haft / MLB.com | 09/12/10 6:59 PM ET SAN DIEGO -- Sunday featured Tim Lincecum doing everything he could to bring the Giants a victory. His effort concluded a 10-game trip in which the Giants did virtually everything they could to earn a postseason berth. Lincecum pitched seven gritty innings and stroked a two-run single to lead the Giants past San Diego, 6-1, and pull San Francisco virtually even with the Padres atop the National League West standings for the second time in three days. The Giants were winners on each stop of their three-city sojourn, taking two of three at Los Angeles and Arizona before subduing the Padres to finish the trip with a 7-3 record. So it was fitting for Lincecum, the Giants' biggest winner of all since he ascended to the Major Leagues in 2007, to conclude this crucial stretch with another powerful performance. Lincecum (14-9) struck out nine in seven innings while allowing San Diego's lone run and seven hits. As if for emphasis, the two-time NL Cy Young Award winner ended four innings with strikeouts. Lincecum bested Padres ace Mat Latos (14-6), who surrendered five runs and seven hits in four innings. Buster Posey's two-run, first-inning homer ignited the Giants' offense, which ended Latos' Major League-record streak of 15 consecutive starts of at least five innings in which he allowed two or fewer runs. Latos looked indomitable as he struck out Aaron Rowand and Freddy Sanchez to open the game. Then Aubrey Huff singled to right field. Up came Posey, who again demonstrated his opposite-field prowess by lashing Latos' first pitch into the right-field seats for his 13th homer of the season. The same combination helped the Giants add a third-inning run. Huff singled with one out and dashed to third base on Posey's hit-and-run single, a line drive past shortstop. Jose Guillen's sacrifice fly delivered Huff. Lincecum applied the finishing touches to Latos' afternoon one inning later, after Pablo Sandoval walked and Juan Uribe doubled.
