The San Francisco Giants have signed left-handed pitcher Dontrelle Willis to
a minor-league contract, according to the team's official Twitter page.
The Giants become Willis' third organization this season. The genial
southpaw, who became a national sensation in 2003 with his infectious smile
and memorable high leg kick delivery, was traded from the Tigers to the
Diamondbacks on June 1 after Detroit designated him for assignment.
Willis fared no better in Arizona than he did in the Motor City, and the
D'backs released him on July 6 after he refused a minor-league assignment.
The Giants have one of the sturdiest and deepest rotations in all of
baseball, so Willis is probably little more than organizational filler at
this point, a stark sign of just how far he has fallen as a pitcher since
that rookie season of '03.
Willis is 2-3 with a 5.62 ERA between Detroit and Arizona this year. He has
more walks (56) than strikeouts (47).
