05/27/2006 3:02 AM ET Giants pummel Rockies in opener Schmidt pitches seven scoreless innings for fourth straight win By Rich Draper / MLB.com Travis Ishikawa strokes a two-run double in the fifth inning. (Jeff Chiu/AP) SAN FRANCISCO -- There's nothing like a shaving-cream pie in the face to make a guy feel like part of a team. Giants rookie first baseman Travis Ishikawa took it in good spirits as fellow freshman Kevin Frandsen and catcher Todd Greene mashed the pie in the kisser during a postgame TV interview Friday night, for he knew it was more than rookie hazing. It meant he did something good. The 22-year-old Ishikawa was called up Thursday to replace injured starter Lance Niekro and was surprised to find himself in the starting lineup, but he celebrated by going 3-for-4 with two doubles and three RBIs in San Francisco's 9-0 rout of Colorado at AT&T Park. "Our defensive first baseman turned out to be offensive," said manager Felipe Alou, after the Giants pounded out 11 hits, with second baseman Ray Durham driving in three runs with a pair of doubles to complement starter Jason Schmidt's nice four-hitter over seven frames. In three games with San Francisco this year, Ishikawa is batting a hot .667, and while Alou originally planned to start Mark Sweeney at first in Saturday 6:05 p.m. PT contest, the rookie's great game gave him pause. "I gotta talk to some people here," cracked Alou, pondering using Ishikawa in the second game of the three-game set. "I told him before the game we didn't expect him to carry the offense, just do the best he could." Ishikawa, whose great-grandparents immigrated from Japan, was deluged by a contingent of Japanese reporters and local media after the game -- "I can only count to 10 in Japanese," he said -- and said he felt more comfortable as the game wore on. "It was definitely nice to feel like you give them a reason to do that," said Ishikawa, his face studded with a cream-pie soul patch. "It's always a great feeling to hit the ball hard." He and Durham punished losing pitcher Jeff Francis (3-4) all night, sending the Rockies to their fourth straight defeat and halting a two-game Giants losing streak. "He threw me a good pitch on the double [a two-run shot in San Francisco's five-run fifth] and I was just able to hit it hard and find some grass," said Ishikawa. "I couldn't have asked for more, other than not grounding out in the fourth inning. "The first couple of innings on defense I caught myself gazing at the crowd a little bit and seeing the stands that are all filled up, but as it went along, I realized it was just a game and the nerves went away," he said. "That definitely helped at the plate." Durham, meanwhile, feasted yet again on the offerings of the left-handed Francis, and his timely offense in the fifth spot -- batting behind Barry Bonds -- paid off handsomely. Durham is 10-for-18 (.556) lifetime vs. Francis, doubled in a run in the first inning and doubled again in the fifth behind an intentional walk to Bonds, who went 1-for-2 with an RBI single, a walk, a run scored and a hit-by-pitch. The veteran infielder hardly took offense at seeing Bonds purposely passed to get to him. "You have to come into a series and say, 'What's the one guy in the lineup who can hurt you?' and Barry is it," said Durham. "You're not going to let him beat you. It worked out to our favor because I got the two doubles." As for his "owning" Francis, Durham could only laugh. "I don't know -- I'm not even going to try to figure it out," he said. "I'm just going to let it go. I really look for something in the strike zone and put a good swing on it. ... It's falling for me. I'm just going to ride it out." Schmidt continues to pitch impressively. He improved to 3-0 in five May starts , each of which has lasted at least seven frames. This month, he has a brilliant 1.12 ERA with 25 strikeouts, and he's won four consecutive games overall. "It was kind of hit or miss at times, but the biggest thing was the team scored a lot of runs," said Schmidt. "It made it a lot easier and took the pressure off me. "I just let 'em hit it, more than anything, and it worked out for the best." Rich Draper is a reporter for MLB.com.
