Bonds' surgically repaired right knee has not responded to rehabilitation as quickly as he and the Giants had hoped, The Chronicle has learned. Nearly five weeks after his most recent operation, Bonds has not begun any on-field baseball work. As a result, it seems unlikely he will fulfill the most optimistic prediction for his return, May 1, or a little more than six weeks following the surgery. Bonds has had two arthroscopic procedures on the right knee this year, one on Jan. 31, the other on March 17. In both operations, he had torn cartilage removed. After the first surgery, the Giants issued a statement saying they expected Bonds to be competitive in six weeks. They provided no timetables after the second operation, but indicated the two procedures were similar. Even though Bonds' knee has not responded quickly to rehabilitation, there are no indications the dire prediction, made by Bonds during an impromptu March 22 news conference, will come true. Bonds told reporters he might not return until the middle of the season or next year, if he returned at all. The Giants have instituted a complete news blackout on Bonds' rehabilitation, but manager Felipe Alou, speaking before Tuesday night's game against the Padres, sounded as though he is not expecting to have Bonds return anytime soon. Alou said when Bonds was rehabilitating his right knee after the Jan. 31 operation, he hoped the left fielder would be playing by this time. "After the second surgery, me and the team in general, we knew it was going to be awhile," Alou said. "We can't wait for him. We've got to allow the process of healing and the complete rehabilitation to take place. Right now, we've played 12 games and we know Barry is not going to be here tomorrow. Right now he's out of our scope. "We just hope he gets well as soon as possible." Bonds joined the team in Los Angeles last week. He then returned to San Francisco to continue working with a member of the Giants' training staff. The Chronicle reported April 9 that Bonds also is conducting weight training with his longtime friend and personal trainer Greg Anderson, who is awaiting trial on federal charges of distributing performance-enhancing drugs in the BALCO case. During an on-field ceremony Opening Day, Bonds told fans in San Francisco, "I will be back." In the latest journal on his Web site, Bonds expressed his gratitude for the ovation he received that day and said, "I would like my fans to know the appreciation and support shown to me as a player makes me want to get back even more." --
