People forget that the Rockies were in a three-way tie for first place last July 5, albeit with a 44-40 record. Other little-known Rockies facts: Third baseman Garrett Atkins had a higher OPS than the Mets' David Wright last season and right fielder Brad Hawpe was a coveted trade target at the winter meetings. The point: The Rockies are on the rise. Poll General manager Dan O'Dowd quietly had a productive off-season, adding two affordable starting pitchers, righties Rodrigo Lopez and Brian Lawrence, two well-regarded young pitchers, righties Jason Hirsh and Taylor Buchholz, plus right-handed setup man LaTroy Hawkins and center fielder Willy Taveras. Even without innings-eater Jason Jennings, who was traded to the Astros, the Rockies' pitching should be better and deeper than in the past — assuming that the humidor again depresses scoring at Coors Field. For the most part, the Rockies' young players are further along than the Diamondbacks', the exceptions being shortstop Troy Tulowitzki and catcher Chris Iannetta, neither of whom has 100 major-league at-bats. O'Dowd believes Kaz Matsui's resurgence in Colorado last season was not a fluke, and that the 1-2 combination of Matsui/Jamey Carroll and Taveras will create opportunities for the middle of the order. The problem: Helton has been in decline since 2003, though last season's dropoff can be attributed to lost strength from a stomach ailment that sidelined him early in the season. The Rockies again need Helton to be their offensive linchpin. They need one or more of their young pitchers — Hirsh, righty Ubaldo Jimenez, lefty Franklin Morales — to make an impact. They need Tulowitzki to fulfill his vast promise, and their other young position players to keep improving. It's a lot to ask.
