We've lost track of how many versions we've been through of what's going to work in Colorado, but it's never produced more than 83 victories in a season. This year's version has a chance to be the most fun to watch. It's kids and more kids, pretty much Todd Helton, probably Preston Wilson after two knee operations and a talented group of young players. The lessons of experience — our experience and not the players' — is that when we get excited about a bunch of young players, we're usually a year or so early. Still, these kids can play and will. Clint Hurdle is a "just show me you can do it the right way" kind of manager. The roster isn't littered with veterans just waiting to be shoved aside. With the exception of catcher Charles Johnson, whom Colorado has tried to deal, nobody is in the way. This team will be as young as the division-favorite Giants are old. The Rockies set an unofficial record last season when they added eight non-roster invitees to their 25-man roster on Opening Day. Just about everyone loads up with non-roster guys these days, and it's often fully expected a couple are going to make the club. But Colorado got 1,082 plate appearances and 3551/3 innings pitched from the group: Royce Clayton, Shawn Estes, Jeff Fassero, Denny Hocking, Vladimir Nunez, Kit Pellow, Mark Sweeney and Turk Wendell. And, you know what? Not one of them is on the Rockies' 40-man roster today. We're not talking about scrap-heap scrubs here. Clayton and Estes have landed free-agent deals in Arizona and figure to be regulars. Sweeney will be a super-sub for San Diego. The rest all have non-roster deals elsewhere this year. That's how committed the Rockies are to these rookies: J.D. Closser will catch, whether or not Johnson is around. Garrett Atkins probably will win the third base job. Clint Barmes will be the shortstop, and Brad Hawpe can win at least half of the right field job in a battle with veteran Dustan Mohr. That's only the half of it. Second baseman Aaron Miles and left fielder Matt Holliday finished 4-5 in last year's NL Rookie of the Year voting. Pitcher Chin-hui Tsao could be at least part of the closer situation, especially if Colorado doesn't land a veteran such as Robb Nen. Jeff Francis will be in the rotation and just might be the best rookie pitcher in baseball this season. Yeah, and we all know about pitching in Denver and whatever it all has to do with why there have been so many versions of the Rockies in the first place. Still, Jason Jennings was a Rookie of the Year pitching there. Don't read the Francis endorsement as a pick to win the NL's Jackie Robinson Award. He'll have too much competition, just in his own clubhouse. The choice here is Atkins, who still must prove to Hurdle he has made enough progress defensively at third base to nail down the job this spring. If necessary, they're not afraid to hand third to Luis Gonzalez, the Rule 5 pick from Cleveland who hit an eye-opening .292 with 12 homers for the Rockies last year. But Atkins has hit .317 over his 2,110 minor league at-bats, including .366 with 15 homers and 94 RBI at Triple-A Colorado Springs last year. Even if he does play everyday, what becomes of Atkins a year from now? If you want to know how impressive this youth movement might be, know that the Rockies have another third baseman, Ian Stewart, who will turn 20 the first week of the season. People in the organization haven't been afraid to compare him to a young Vladimir Guerrero. He'll probably play at high-A Modesto in the California League this year, but this is a fast-track guy, as would be several others such as first baseman Ryan Shealy if there were room for everyone. No disrespect to the parade of veterans who have rolled through Denver as if it were a slope at Vail — though too many were going the direction of your average skier — but the combination of long balls and lack of energy too often over the past decade had all the pizzazz of batting practice.
