As per team policy, terms of the agreement were not released. Hayes (6-6, Kentucky) averaged 3.7 points and 4.5 rebounds in 40 games as a rookie with the Rockets this past season. He finished third among all NBA rookies in rebounds per 48 minutes played (15.8) and tied for eighth in boards per game (4.5). Overall, he had five double-digit rebounding performances and led or tied for the team lead in rebounding in six games. In just his second NBA game, Hayes registered the first double-double of his career with 12 points and a career-high 13 rebounds at Chicago (1/20), adding a career-best two blocks, one assist and one steal in a career-most 32:55 off the bench. Hayes was also credited with the key steal in an 86-83 win over the Nuggets, which he converted into a dunk to give the Rockets an 84-83 lead with 13.4 seconds to play. He recorded a career-high 14 points on 6-of-7 shooting in the season finale vs. San Antonio (4/19). Originally signed as a rookie free agent with Houston on Oct. 3, Hayes was waived by the Rockets on Oct. 25. He was selected sixth overall in the 2005 NBA D-League Draft by the Albuquerque Thunderbirds, averaging 11.6 points and a league-leading 12.2 rebounds in 14 games (13 starts) with Albuquerque. Hayes was re-signed by the Rockets to a 10-day contract on Jan. 18, and signed for the remainder of the season on Jan. 28. He also averaged 6.4 points and 4.2 rebounds in five games with Houston in the 2005 Minnesota Summer League, helping the Rockets to a 5-0 overall record. He finished his collegiate career at Kentucky ranked 35th in scoring (1,211 points), seventh in rebounding (910), ninth in blocks (128), eighth in steals (170) and 16th in assists (292) in school history. Hayes also started 110 consecutive games, tying the school record set by Alex Groza from 1946-49. While at Kentucky, Hayes won two SEC Championships and two SEC Tournament titles.
